And about the holiday show beneficiary…

Hillsides in Pasadena is an organization that works with foster kids, emancipated kids, and families in crisis. I decided to donate to them this holiday season for a number of reasons. I edit a podcast for All Saints Church in Pasadena and was listening to an interview with an amazing young woman who talked about wanting to give back to her community who came out of Hillsides, she seemed so self-aware and positive as she detailed a schedule of school and multiple jobs, including graveyard bicycle security shifts that would certainly put me in a sour mood. When she mentioned Hillsides, I remembered that I’d just done one of my children’s shows there a couple weeks ago, and had met really lovely, challenged kids. One was an eager, dutiful participant in our show, then came back later to visit while we were breaking down. Then he acted out in a way to draw negative attention. But that boy could be the girl who so inspired me in her interview in a few years. I’d like to help facilitate that. Also, they bring in artists monthly (with compensation) to present to the kids, (one of which was me!), so I think it would be great to give back after I’ve been doubly inspired and supported by the organization. And, lastly, kids in the system really need our help. The more love and resources we can share the stronger our investment in a future for all of us

Octogenarian Phenom, Larry Wolf’s Single

I recorded this a couple weeks ago for a friend of mine, Larry Wolf. Larry is known for his acting in a number of films directed by Robert Downey, Sr., including Robert Downey, Jr.‘s first acting scene in the movie “Pound.” He’s 83 years old and sounds great. We’re in the process of trying to set him up with his own Facebook page, etc. But, give this a listen and please share some comments that I can share with Larry. It’ll make him happy to know that people are listening. And If you have any ideas of how more people can hear his music, let us know.

Christmas Tree Lighting & Toy Drive, Buena Park, Friday, 12/08 6pm

5th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting & Toy Drive

I will be leading off this event in Buena Park Friday! Thanks to Imani Tolliver for inviting me to share a couple of songs. I’ll be performing “Come By Here” from my album MMIX and “All You Need is Love” celebrating the memory of John Lennon. I hope to see you there!

5th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting & Toy Drive
Friday, December 8 at 6 p.m
Buena Park City Hall, 6650 Beach Blvd.

Gather around the tree at this free event to enjoy the sights and sounds of holiday cheer in the company of family, friends and community.

The festivities kick off with the lighting of the tree by City Council followed by special performances and entertainment from Dickens Holiday Carolers, storytellers, vocalists and musicians! Santa and Mrs. Claus make their grand entrance on an Orange County Fire Authority truck. The little ones can share their holiday wishes with Santa while also saying hello to Snoopy and some friendly knights, pirates and princesses.

In honor of this season of giving, the event is also host to a Toy Drive benefiting local charities. We encourage attendees to bring a new, unwrapped gift for children.

Seasonal treats and warm refreshments will be available for purchase. You don’t want to miss out on the photo opportunities, sing-a-long fun, treats and more.

For more information, please call (714) 562-3860 or visit us at BuenaPark.com

Holiday Show — Special Guests! Genghis Cohen, Los Angeles, Friday, 12/22, 7pm

I’m so excited to be joined by Thee Holy Brothers (Marvin Etzioni and Willie Aron); Circe Link & Christian Nesmith; Joselyn & Don; Celsi, Bragg & Ivan; and The Hardship Letters (from Kansas City) for my annual holiday show at Genghis Cohen.

My mother is visiting from New Hampshire, so I wanted to put on a show. It became a celebration! And we’re going to donate proceeds to Hillsides Youth Moving On in Pasadena.

Genghis Cohen, Los Angeles, Saturday, 09/09/17

UPDATE: We’ll be starting as close to 9:30 as possible. Good news: we’ll have the rest of the evening to ourselves. I just got word of the possible delay, it’s been changed on the Genghis calendar to 9:45.

Looking forward to being back at Genghis to close out the summer. Oh yes, the suit was from a sidelining gig I did for the TV show Scandal this month. I’m playing “Summer Soft” from Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life at a White House party. The whole company were super nice people. It was a great surprise to get the call, especially because I’m a fan of the show. It’ll show in episode 2 of the new season. Getting to play a Stevie song really got me inspired. His musical freedom is just audacious! It makes me really excited to share some newer stuff with you all!

See you on the 9th!

And you can share the event and RSVP on Facebook, too.

“Frida Kahlo: The Dream is the Truth” Buena Park, 9/15/17

Meet the sixteen artists of The Dream is the Truth: Art Inspired by Frida Kahlo exhibition at the opening reception on Friday, September 15, 6-8 p.m. at City Hall Council Chamber, 6650 Beach Blvd.

Guests will have the chance to meet the artists and view their artwork, inspired by Frida Kahlo in many ways, while enjoying live music and poetry. The event is free and open to the public.
Frida Kahlo’s life and work has served as inspiration to artists of many identities for decades. The title for this show comes from Zora Neale Hurston’s seminal novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God. Although Kahlo’s work has often been described as Surrealist, she resisted the label, asserting, “I don’t paint dreams or nightmares, I paint my own reality.”

The Dream is the Truth will be on display at Buena Park City Hall Council Chamber September 12 – November 2, 2017. The Exhibiting Artist Program nurtures partnerships between artists, presenters, art organizations and the greater Buena Park Community.

For more information or to confirm viewing availability, please contact the Fine Arts Division at (714) 562-3868.
