Highway One
We parked at the edge of Highway 1
Left the keys in the ignition
And the doors open
Wind caught your hair
Your hand took mine
And light burst through the heavy sky

I could never paint painful beauty like that
Past my eyes
Said you'd be back to me

400 miles up this coast
You'll question a marriage we must postpone
You'll search potential near the Golden Gate
That's way too easy.
How long?
How long?

This car will carry me back home
With wistful words: you said you'd be back to me.

Though I won't leave until morning comes
I think you said goodbye today

I took I-5 on the way back home
To the Grapevine, in the heat I pulled off the road
They say there's healing power in this lake's namesake
I see ski boats and families on this Sunday

Tomorrow I fly to see some friends
We never shared this house, but I can't sleep in this bed
